Greenwich girls swimming and diving upends Ridgefield

The Greenwich High School girls swimming and diving team battled a familiar face to first-year head coach Lorraine Najam and came away with the 98-85 victory over Ridgefield High School yesterday afternoon.

Najam, who used to be the coach at Ridgegfield, saw her team fall behind early, as the Tigers captured the the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle.

However that’s when Big Red fought back. In the 200-yard individual medley, Kelly Montesi won the event, posting a time of 2:12.61. In the fastest event of the day, the 50-yard freestyle, Greenwich’s Sophie Jahan captured the gold with a time of 25.30 seconds.

When it came to diving, Greenwich reigned supreme, as Emily Murphy was top with 221.98 points.

Although the Tigers took top honors in the 100-yard butterfly, Jahan struck again, winning her second gold of the day in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.72. The Lady Cardinals kept the good times rolling in the 500-yard freestyle, as Patty Kohn was the quickest in the pool, touching the wall with a time of 5:26.29.

Big Red iced the meet in the final event. Competing in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the foursome of Montesi, Jahan, Isobel Walker and Riley Ennis won the event to give Greenwich High the victory.
