Greenwich native, Columbus’ Atkinson stars in season opener

The Columbus Blue Jackets opened its season in Buffalo tonight and it was Greenwich native Cam Atkinson that stole the show, as he scored a goal and was named the game’s top star as the Jackets came away with the 3-1 victory.

With the game knotted at 1-1 into the third period, the Blue Jackets were on the power play, courtesy of a hooking penalty by Sabres’ Brian Gionta. After the original shot was saved by , Atkinson got rebound behind the net on the right corner of the rink.

Atkinson then skated up to the front of the net, turned and blasted a wrist shot in front of the net for the 2-1 lead with three seconds remaining on the power play and with 7:16 to play in the game. Ryan Johansen and Nick Foligno were credited with the assist.

In addition to his third period goal, Atkinson finished with three shots on net and 15:38 of ice time.

With less than three minutes to play, Artem Anisimov scored on the deflection. Alexander Wennberg and Scott Hartnell were given assists.

Jack Skille started the game by giving the Blue Jackets the 1-0 lead with 13:21 to play in the opening period, as he uncorked a wrister that Jared Boll and Michael Chaput assisted on.

In net, Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 21 saves for Columbus. As a team, the Blue Jackets finished with 40 saves.
