Chamber Players season starts this weekend

It promises to be a lively performance of 20th-Century music as the Chamber Players of the Greenwich Symphony open their 43rd season.

Saxophonist Michael Ibrahim will join the Chamber Players in concerts on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 12 and 13, playing works by Webern, Schulhoff, Villa Lobos, and Milhaud.

“We are excited about our new season, and especially pleased to present, in our first concerts, chamber music scored for saxophone along with the more traditional instruments,” said Christine Boies, president of the Chamber Players.

Mr. Ibrahim has performed as a soloist and with chamber groups throughout North America, Europe and Russia.

As a freelance performer at the center of New York’s contemporary classical scene, he has worked with many New York City ensembles in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall, and Symphony Space.

“When I explain to people that I play and teach the saxophone, the response is usually, ‘So you play jazz?’ And it’s true; the sax is probably the most iconic jazz instrument,” Mr. Ibrahim said. “I do play and enjoy the various idioms of jazz, but my specialty is classical music.”

Also programmed and eagerly anticipated is the treasured Brahms Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano Op. 114, to be played by Philip Bashor, Danny Miller and Andrew Gordon.

Season concerts are on Sunday afternoons at 4 at the Round Hill Community Church, 395 Round Hill Road, and on Monday evenings at 7:30 at the Bruce Museum, One Museum Drive.Following the Oct. 12 to 13 concerts, the season’s dates are Nov. 9 to 10, and in 2015, March 8 to 9 and April 12 to 13. A season’s subscription is $85 adult, $15 student. For a single concert, tickets are $30 for adults and $5 for students. Audiences and musicians may enjoy a complimentary wine-and-cheese reception at each concert.
