Greenwich Academy field hockey blanks RCDS 5-0

After a few days off from competition, the Greenwich Academy field hockey team hosted Rye Country Day School and shut out their Fairchester Athletic Association foe 5-0 Tuesday afternoon.

“Our forwards and midfielders really connected well and put the pressure on Rye when we had the opportunity,” Greenwich Academy head coach Jaime Brower said. “We kept alive a number of our corners, which was nice to see, especially the pressure after the initial shot. We have been working on that and they did a nice job today.”

The Gators came out of the gate flying, scoring three first half goals. With 17:12 to play in the first half, Tatiana Viola found the back of the cage and Caroline Keller was awarded the assist.

Less than 10 minutes later, Greenwich Academy struck again. Alexi Olney got the ball with 8:54 to play off a dish from Olivia LeSueur and Viola and netted the team’s second goal.

Viola rounded out the scoring in the first half with her second goal of the game. With 7:47 to play, Alexa Murray and Katrina Kraus got the ball to Viola, who put it behind the RCDS goalie for the 3-0 halftime lead.

Kate DeFrino got into scoring column with 17:33 to play, as Murray, Kraus and Viola were credited assists on the goal.

The Gators rounded out the scoring with 5:36 to play, as Keller picked up her second goal of the game off an assist from Viola. In net, Julia Booth finished with seven saves to pick up the shut out.

In total, GA had 12 shots on goal and six penalty corners. On the other side of the ball, Rye Country Day finished with seven shots on goal, but added 11 penalty corners.

“They really put the pressure on us,” Brower said. “Out of their 11 corners, they had a couple of times where they had several corners in a row, but the defense handled it nicely. Julia made some nice saves and the defense finally got the ball out.”

The Gators will be back in action Thursday when they host Greens Farms Academy.
