White burgundy bargains

Col-head-ZalkinBurgundy is one of the most famous (and famously expensive) wines in the world, but even in this rock star wine region, there are still plenty of affordable, approachable wines to be had.

Burgundy, (or “Bourgogne” in French) is in eastern France, and is made up of a number of subregions, many of which are quite famous in their own right. Cote d’Or, Cote de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Beaujolais, Pouilly-Fuissé, Chablis, Macon-Villages, and Meursault are all regions or sub-regions in Burgundy.

Nearly all of the white wines from Burgundy are made from chardonnay and this region produces a particularly lively and complex expression of the grape. White burgundy is famed for the purity of its mineral and fruit flavors. The wines are often aged in steel or glass-lined concrete rather than oak, and even when oak is used, it is used delicately, manifesting in soft vanilla notes or a hint of butter. Residual sugar is kept low, and balanced with refreshing acidity.

These wines have the potential to age for a long time, 10 years or more in some cases. They pair well with soft cheeses, fish with herbs, as well as more richly seasoned tarts and stews. A perfect wine to take you from summer into fall!

Here are a few featured white burgundy wines for your enjoyment:

• Chanson Pere & Fils Vire-Clessé: A pale gold wine featuring floral aromas topped with lemon and fresh honey. Crisp on the palate, with fine minerality and a refreshing finish. Wonderful on its own as an apéritif, or with raw vegetables and light seafood.

• Louis Latour Pouilly-Vinzelles: Aromas of exotic fruits, with an underlying hint of fresh bread. An ample, round wine with notes of peach and a light, peppery, finish.

• Bouchard Pere & Fils Bourgogne Blanc: A well-balanced wine with ample fruit, medium body, and a clean finish. Hints of pear and oak.

• Jean Claude Fromont Macon Villages Chardonnay: Powerfully rich and complex with an affordable price. Lively and crisp with apple and lemon flavors.
