Greenwich United Way kicks off campaign

The Greenwich United Way 2014-2015 Community Campaign officially kicks off today, Sept. 18, as First Selectman Peter Tesei is set to announce the organization’s 80th fall fund-raising launch.

There will be a brief ceremony on the steps of Town Hall starting at 4:30 and Mr. Tesei and the United Way have invited residents, businesses, town employees and others to attend so they can salute and support the Greenwich United Way and its efforts on the community’s behalf.

Mr. Tesei will read an official proclamation at the event marking the 80th anniversary of the United Way, which serves the community by identifying and meeting the health and human service needs of the community. Each year the United Way raises and distributes more dollars for essential local services than any other non-governmental source.

Brook and Michael Urban will serve as co-chairs of the community campaign. Ms. Urban is a past president of the Junior League of Greenwich and a past executive director of the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross. Dr. Urban is a prominent Greenwich anesthesiologist, and a member of the board of United Way partner agency, Liberation Programs.

Leadership Division Chairman Debra McLaughlin is seeking individual contributions between $1,500 and $9,999. Business and Professional Division Chair Jamie Tyndall will also be introduced. A member of the Junior League of Greenwich and various professional groups, she is a 25-year mortgage veteran and Greenwich resident since 1995.

The Public Service Division solicits the participation of employees of local non-profit, education, healthcare and municipal organizations. Greenwich Department of Social Services Commissioner Dr. Alan Barry and Town Clerk Carmella Budkins are again volunteering for the job of encouraging local employees to participate.

The United Way’s first special fund-raising event is Oktoberfest, set for Oct. 24 at the Loading Dock in Stamford. For ticket and underwriting information, go to Unitedway-greenwich.org.
