Dance, vigil to be held in memory of Emily Fedorko

The memory of Emily Fedorko will be honored at a special event set for this Saturday at the Greenwich Teen Center.

The Dance for Emily will be on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the teen center. Admission is $20 and all proceeds will benefit the Emily Catherine Fedorko Foundation, which was created after the death of the 16-year-old girl who was set to be a junior this year at Greenwich High School.

The dance will be proceeded by a candlelight vigil at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, which is right beside the Greenwich Teen Center at 100 Arch Street at 7:30 p.m. This is the Teen Center’s first dance of the new school year and it is only for high school students in town but the vigil, for which there is no charge, is open to anyone in town.

Emily was killed in a boating accident on Aug. 6 in Long Island Sound that left another friend seriously injured. The matter continues to be under investigation by the Greenwich Police Department and the tragedy has been deeply felt in the community. Kyle Silver, executive director of the Greenwich Teen Center, told the Post he knew Emily from times she had come to Arch Street and that several members of the student board of directors there were close friends of hers.

“There were a lot of people who knew her and were deeply affected by her loss, and it just didn’t feel right to have our first event and not pay tribute to her in some way,” Mr. Silver said.

Tickets for the dance, which will have all the proceeds go to the foundation that her family set up in her name, are available at the Teen Center as well as at Greenwich High School. Tickets will not be needed for the vigil and all ages are welcome. Since the dance is restricted to high school students, Mr. Silver said he wanted an event that could also bring in parents as well as younger kids in Greenwich since Emily had a younger sister and this tragedy affected people of all ages in town.

Donations may be sent to The Emily Catherine Fedorko Foundation at P.O. Box 72 Cos Cob, CT 06807.
