The Greenwich Historical Society will hold its 83rd annual meeting on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Belle Haven Club. Immediately following a cocktail reception and recap of the year’s activities by Executive Director Debra Mecky, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author Robert K. Massie will present a lecture entitled “Reflections on the Centennial of WW I: Lessons Learned and Not Learned.”

In keeping with the topic of the Historical Society’s upcoming fall/winter exhibition Greenwich Faces the Great War, which will be open Oct. 1 through March 22, 2015, Mr. Massie will draw on themes from his two books about World War I to describe the tensions that led up to the conflict and to explain how, a century later, the Great War continues to influence world events.

Mr. Massie was born in Lexington, Ky., and studied American history at Yale and European history at Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He was president of the Authors Guild from 1987 to 1991.

His books include Nicholas and Alexandra; Peter the Great: His Life and World (for which he won a Pulitzer Prize for biography); The Romanovs: The Final Chapter; Dreadnought: Britain, Germany, and the Coming of the Great War; Castles of Steel: Britain, Germany, and the Winning of the Great War at Sea and Catherine the Great: Portrait of A Woman.

A question and answer period will follow the lecture. The lecture will be held at the Belle Haven Club, at 100 Harbor Drive. The reception will begin at 6 p.m., with the program expected to run from 6:30 to 8. Reservations are required, and attendance will cost $35 for members and $40 for nonmembers. To purchase tickets, visit Greenwichhistory.org or call 203-869-6899, ext. 10.
