Local Greenwich clubs take to pool for FCSL finals

The Fairfield County Swim League held its summer swimming championships Sunday at Stamford’s Roxbury Swim & Tennis Club and it was Greenwich’s Rocky Point Club that came away with the combined team championship, grabbing 1,106 points.

Five other Greenwich-based clubs also placed in the top 12 of the 31-team field. Innis Arden took fifth overall with 549.5 points, while Riverside Yacht Club took ninth overall with 420 points. Bailiwick Club netted 10th overall with 306.5 points and Milbrook Club finished 11th overall with 238.5 points. Burning Tree Country Club wasn’t far behind, taking 12th overall with 226 points.

A handful of Greenwich athletes achieved record-breaking times during the event.

Competing for Bailiwick, Meghan Lynch, 8, was golden in the 25-meter breaststroke, swimming into the FCSL record books with a time of 18.95 seconds and besting her previous record set earlier this year. In the 25-meter backstroke, Lynch broke a record that was set back in 1976, touching the wall with a top time of 18.72.

Lynch finished her day by shattering yet another record. In the 25-meter freestyle, Lynch broke the record set by Gretchen Walsh last year by finishing the event first with a time of 15.18.

Not to be outdone was Innis Arden’s Katie Evans, 15, who grabbed two first-place finishes overall and one FCSL record of her own. Competing in the 100-meter individual medley, Evans was golden and took home a time of 1:06.18, beating the time of 1:06.66 set by Kerry Gruendel back in 2006.

Evans also competed in the 50-meter breaststroke and took first place overall with a commanding time of 34.57.

Alex Walsh, 10, also finished with her name in the record books. The Rocky Point Club swimmer was golden in the girls 50-meter freestyle event, besting her own record set earlier this year with a time of 29.89.

Walsh also took first in the 25-meter breaststroke (16.68).
