The Greenwich High School boys soccer team started the season on a winning notes yesterday afternoon, beating Ridgefield High School 3-1 in a rematch from last year’s FCIAC championship game.

The star of the game was Nick Bartels, as he finished the contest by netting all three goals for Big Red. Two of the heads were from free kicks, while captain Dan Ozizmir finished with two assists and fellow captain Chris Galeano added one assist.

In the contest, the returning players from last year’s standout team stepped up big to lead the Cardinals to the victory over the Tigers.

In total, four sophomores, Alejandro Maclean, Inaki Mendive, Zack Friedman and Jose Romero, started their first varsity game all rose to the occasion.

The only downside to Big Red’s victory was when Galeano left at the end of the game with a serious ankle injury that will likely send him to the sidelines for several games.
