Volunteers needed for Reading Champions program

Reading Champions volunteers will soon be back at work with Greenwich elementary school students, meeting one on one for an hour each week to help them improve their reading skills.

A partnership of the United Way Youth Services Council and the Greenwich Public Schools, Reading Champions is different from other volunteer reading programs. Reading Champions focuses on building students’ reading fluency skills.

More than 100 specially trained volunteers tutor several hundred youngsters each year at nine elementary schools in Greenwich plus the Byram Archibald Neighborhood Center, Community Centers Inc. and the Boys and Girls Club.

A commitment of one hour per week is required.

Reading Champions is a well-regarded program that has received high praise from town and school officials for the impact it makes promoting literacy and providing hands on tutoring to help students achieve and become better readers.
