Jewish Family Services of Greenwich (JFS) has announced its upcoming Supermarketing for Seniors Celebrates Grandparents Day event will be Sunday, Sept. 7.

In partnership with neighborhood supermarkets, including A&P, Kings, Stop & Shop and Whole Foods, as well as with The Senior Center of Greenwich, JFS representatives and volunteers will be stationed across the community to raise awareness and funding for the Supermarketing for Seniors program, a nondenominational free grocery shopping and case management service designed to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of housebound Greenwich citizens 60 years of age or older.

Supermarketing for Seniors has served elderly neighbors of Greenwich since 1986 and provides shopping and support services to 180 seniors each year. Although there are no income requirements to participate in the program, 98% of the seniors involved are considered low income by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) guidelines, and many do not have other support systems in their lives to visit and monitor them on a regular basis.

On Sunday, Sept. 7, all community members are invited to visit Supermarketing for Seniors Celebrates Grandparents Day booths anytime between 10 and 4. At each booth, community members can show their support for our program. A donation of just $20 will support a week’s worth of shopping for a senior. All of our stations will have program information, free balloons and postcards that individuals can send to a senior in their own life to wish them a happy Grandparents Day. Finally, a member of the first selectman’s office will be showing support by delivering a proclamation in front of The Senior Center at noon.

The locations of the booths will include A&P in Central Greenwich at 160 West Putnam Avenue, A&P in Riverside at 1261 East Putnam Avenue, Kings in Old Greenwich at 26 Arcadia Road, Stop & Shop in Glenville at 11 Glen Ridge Road, Whole Foods at 90 East Putnam Avenue (between 11 and 2) and The Senior Center at 299 Greenwich Avenue.
