RTM District 9 seeks new members

There are new openings on the Representative Town Meeting, and the body is looking for members from District 9.

There are four District 9 openings and the goal is to fill them on Thursday, Sept. 11, beginning at 7:30 at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center.

The RTM is Greenwich’s legislative body, containing 230 members from the 12 districts into which Greenwich is divided. In order to serve on the RTM one must be a registered voter from the district. District 9 encompasses most of southeastern Greenwich from the Post Road in the south to the end of Bailiwick in the north. The western side of Weaver Street and the western side of Riversville Road are the eastern boundaries. The state line and the Merritt are the western boundaries.

The district covers Glenville, Bailiwick, West Lyon’s Farm, Pemberwick and everything in between.

District 9 has 20 seats but currently has no representation from either West Lyon’s Farm and the surrounding area or from Bailiwick and its surrounding area. District leaders suggest those who want to see their government in action and want to make a difference consider joining

The time commitment is a maximum of 24 meetings a year. There are eight full RTM meeting each year. Meetings take place at Central Middle School at 8 p.m. on Monday nights. There are eight district meetings at 7:30 at the Western Greenwich Civic Center on Thursday night. If a member is assigned to a committee that would be an additional possible eight meetings. For your first year you would be an alternate to a committee.
