Greenwich native, Yale's McHale’s captaincy with Bulldogs suspended

According to a press release on the Yale University’s athletic Web site, former Greenwich High School football player Will McHale, the captain of the 2012 Yale Football team, has requested that his captaincy be immediately suspended by Tony Reno, the Joel E. Smilow ‘54 Head Coach of Football.

This was the result of an altercation with a male student last May in New Haven.

“Will understands that great responsibility comes with being a member of the Yale Community and the field leader of the football program,” said Reno in the release. “Will made a poor decision and his actions are unacceptable to Yale and our football program. He remains an important part of our team, and I fully expect him to work to restore his credibility in the Yale community while remaining a leader on and off the field.”

“It is a privilege to be associated with Yale University and its football program,” said McHale. “To be selected a Yale captain is the highest of honors. I look forward to putting this matter behind me and working to regain the trust and confidence that comes with being member of the Yale football team.”

Reno and the University have no further comments on this matter.
