The Avenue parties hearty

GL-FTR-Party-EThe powerful storm that knocked out power throughout the town made its debut late in the day, but it didn’t damper the spirit at the fourth annual Greenwich Avenue Block Party on Sunday.

The annual event, which is put together by the Greenwich Police Department’s Silver Shield Association and was done in partnership this year with The First Bank of Greenwich and J House, raised money for the Greenwich Parks and Recreation Camp Scholarship. The scholarships allow children from low-income families to attend summer camp. For a suggested donation of $10 at the door, people were able to enter the party that began in the late afternoon and stretched into the evening before the weather caused a rude interruption.

Before then, people at the party were treated to food from local restaurants, live music from Billy & The Showman, who made it through a heat-related health scare for its lead singer, Superhero and The Bored Lords, a “Kids Court,” which had a dunk tank and water slide, and, to enjoy it all, outdoor seating around the Avenue businesses. All of it was designed to create a street festival atmosphere with local restaurants like MacDuff’s Pub, Sundown Saloon and Douro Restaurant joining in the fun.

Greenwich Avenue was closed off at the bottom to everything but foot traffic and those who turned out reported having a great time.
