70-year-old Greenwich man arrested after swinging machete at co-worker

A town of Greenwich employee is under arrest after allegedly swinging a machete at and attempting to strangle a co-worker.

Basil Passerelli, 70, of 30 Homestead Lane was arrested Friday, July 18, and charged with brandishing a dangerous weapon, second degree breach of peace, second degree strangulation, second degree threatening and third degree assault. Mr. Passerelli was released on a $500 cash bond and is due in court on July 25.

According to police, officers were sent to Byram Park at approximately 9:25 a.m. on Friday to respond to the report of a possible assault that had taken place involving town employees. The investigation allegedly determined that Mr. Passerelli had gotten into an argument with another employee and it turned into a physical confrontation.

Mr. Passerelli allegedly pushed the other employee in the chest, put his hand on his throat and then had threatened him by swinging a machete in his direction. Greenwich Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Kraig Gray said the other man refused medical attention at the scene. There were no reports of any injuries.

According to Lt. Gray both of the men are employees of the town’s Parka and Recreation Department. A call to the town’s Department of Human Resources was not immediately returned but town Director of Parks and Recreation Joseph Siciliano told the Post that Mr. Passerelli has been placed on suspension pending a review of the incident.

Mr. Passerelli had once worked full time for the town as a gardener but had retired. He recently returned to part-time work, two days a week, as a gardener for the town. Mr. Siciliano said the other man is a full-time gardener but that he was not aware of what they were fighting about.

More details, as they become available, will be posted at Greenwich-post.com.
