Reading Champions needs volunteers

Volunteer tutors are needed for the Greenwich United Way/Greenwich Public Schools Reading Champions initiative that will begin its fifth year in September.

The all-volunteer weekly tutorial program has grown from a pilot project at North Mianus School to more than 100 tutors who work throughout town with individual elementary school students to improve literacy skills and help overcome the achievement gap in Greenwich Schools.

More than 350 students have participated to date, and Greenwich Schools’ reading specialists report that this program has had a 97% success rate.

Prospective tutors are asked to complete the application form, available on the United Way website,, or contact Youth Services Coordinator Jenny Byxbee at the United Way, 203-869-2221.

All tutors will participate in a one hour training session led by the Literacy Specialists at the schools where experienced tutors will also be available for guidance.
