The Connecticut Council of Family Service Agencies (CCFSA) has honored Family Centers board member Marge Berkley and staff member Sharon Algona as Family Champions for their continued commitment to improving the lives of families.

The two Family Centers professionals were celebrated alongside 28 other Connecticut human services workers and volunteers during a May 15 ceremony held at the Trumbull Marriot.

Ms. Berkley, a Greenwich resident, has served on the Family Centers board of directors for 20 years, including a three-year span as chairman. Ms. Berkley has overseen a number of fundraising initiatives for the Greenwich-based organization, including a Circus benefit in 2000, and a series of business breakfasts that brought high-caliber speakers such as former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to Greenwich.

This year, she served as co-chair to this year’s 14 Annual Literacy Volunteers Scrabble Challenge, the first since the two organizations merged in 2013. Beyond Family Centers, Ms. Berkley works with the Nurturing Families Network to aid first-time parents in Stamford and Greenwich.

Ms. Algona began volunteering at Family Centers three years ago as a student teacher, and was hired as a full-time instructor at the Joan Melber Warburg Early Childhood Center following the conclusion of her internship.

She works with two-year-olds at the center, and is described as a “warm, welcoming presence in the classroom.”

Though just a few years removed from her own tenure as a student teacher, Family Centers said Ms. Algona has been recognized as a leader and will serve as a mentor for a University of Connecticut student.
