Greenwich ‘Rides for Roger’

The annual ALS Tri-State Trek is a celebrated event where bicyclists from all over New England gather to bike away the miles from Newtown, Mass. all the way to Greenwich to raise money to fight ALS.

The fight against ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is one that’s very personal for members of the Greenwich Police Department, as Sgt. Roger Petrone, a former member of the SWAT response team and other high profile assignments, lost his battle with it last year. Members of the department and others in town have been riding in the Tri State Trek for years and this year they did it in Sgt. Petrone’s memory.

Some of the Greenwich riders came all the way from Massachusetts, where the Tri-State Trek began, and others came just for the final leg of the grueling journey, which requires peak physical conditioning to do. The final part of the journey, which came down Greenwich Avenue, was a special one as Sgt, Petrone’s daughter Sydney came on to lead everyone to the finish.

GPD Lt. Richard Cochran has been doing the Tri State Trek for years and he told the Post it was “bittersweet” this year to do it knowing his friend wouldn’t be there to greet everyone at the finish. But he said it was special to ride down with Sydney.

“He was our inspiration and it was always wonderful to see him there at the end and see people come up to him and give him a high five,” Lt. Cochran said. “It was great to do this with Sydney. She was a little scared at first but she wanted to do this.”

And it wasn’t just for Sgt., Petrone that people participated. Hundreds of riders rode for people stricken with the disease, some of whom were able to attend and cheer the riders on as they reached the finish line in town at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park. Cowbells were used by the many supporters to encourage people along the way and there was a big celebration waiting for everyone when they arrived in the park to finish the long journey from Massachusetts.

The Post was at the scene for the finish and above is a slideshow of images from those arriving and those paying tribute to Sgt. Petrone’s memory.
