Greenwich man ‘gravely injured’ after drunk driving hit and run

An alleged drunk driving hit and run has landed a 23-year-old resident in the hospital for multiple injuries and a New York teenager under arrest.

Police say that the man, who has not been publicly identified, was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of West Putnam Avenue and Western Junior Highway early Friday morning. Police officers along with Greenwich Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) personnel responded to the intersection around 12:15 a.m. Friday morning on the report of the accident.

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency workers discovered that the victim had been struck while crossing West Putnam Avenue and was that he was “gravely injured.” The responsible vehicle had allegedly fled the scene of the crash prior to the arrival of police and had not stopped to help the injured man.


During the on-scene investigation, the suspect returned with his damaged vehicle and surrendered to police. He has been identified as Matthew Jay Meyers, an 18-year-old Rye Brook, N.Y. resident.

According to officers, Mr. Meyers appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was given a field sobriety test at the scene of the accident. After failing that test he was placed under arrest.

Mr. Meyers was then arrested and charged with second degree assault with a motor vehicle while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated, underage drinking, possession of under half of an ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, evading responsibility, traveling unreasonably fast and operating a motor vehicle without proper endorsement. Mr. Meyers is due in court on August 10.

Police did not offer any additional update on the condition of the man struck by the vehicle. will have more information if it becomes available.
