More than 50 North Mianus students in grades third through fifth started out on a word journey in late September.

After weeks of memorizing hundreds of words and surviving many oral and written elimination rounds, two school champions emerged. The overall champion was fifth-grader Mark Chen, with third-grader Stephanie Chang as runner-up.

Mark and Stephanie moved on to compete at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee in Danbury on March 20. They progressed many rounds, and are looking forward to trying their hand at the title again next year.

North Mianus’ two alternates in third and fourth place, Joshua Kahn and Neha Iyer, will also be looking for a top spot in next year’s spelling bee.
