For his commitment to environmental education, Basil Mavroleon of Greenwich was honored with the 15th annual Red Apple Awards at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk’s annual gala on April 24.

The gala, Cirque de la Mer, honored companies, organizations and individuals who share the aquarium’s concern for the natural world and environmental education. During the event, more than $777,000 was raised to help present The Maritime Aquarium’s environmental education programming to students in Connecticut and throughout the tri-state area.

Mr. Mavroleon co-chaired the Cirque de la Mer galas in 2010 and 2012, and also helped the Aquarium acquire a new research vessel, both as a key voice on the new vessel committee and as a contributor to the $2.7 million project. The boat, the R/V Spirit of the Sound™ will be launched this summer as the only research vessel in the world with a hybrid-electric propulsion system.

Charles Hinnant of Norwalk, who initiated The Maritime Aquarium’s Maritime Golf Classic, was also honored.

Proceeds from Cirque de la Mer support The Maritime Aquarium’s Red Apple Fund for Student Enrichment, which helps to make the Aquarium’s unique marine-science and environmental-education programs available — through field trips as well as traveling teacher programs — to students and teachers who otherwise may not be able to participate.

Featured speakers included U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a Greenwich resident, who said the Red Apple Fund “is what is needed to get kids involved and inspired by science.”
