Library goes ‘app central’

It’s “All About the APPs” at Greenwich Library this summer as it continues a series of programs in its Technology Training Center.

Each session is taught by a librarian who is an expert at finding the most useful and entertaining apps available today and they are free and open to the public.

“Due to the proliferation of iPads, we wanted to do a program on applications because we noticed that searching for them was difficult for any user, myself included. We also realized that some people don’t understand what apps are and how to use them. Through this series, we hope to give our patrons some insight into the world of apps,” said training librarian Jasmine Posey.

During the All About the Apps series, patrons will learn how to become comfortable with using applications for their iPads, Kindle Fires, Nook tablets and Android tablets. Over the course of eight weeks, staff will help patrons understand what apps are and how to use them effectively in their daily lives. The majority of the apps featured are free and topics will focus on apps for travel, social networking, lifestyle, entertainment, and eats among others. Additionally, the library offers several apps including BookPage, Overdrive and Mango languages, which can be found on the library’s website.

The program is designed to get people of all different interests. For instance the Eats Apps program on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. will feature apps for all things food related including restaurants, cooking, recipes, restaurant reservations and reviews. Then there’s the Apps for Apple program which meets four times a month. This program will offer tips for searching the Apple App Store efficiently. And if you missed anything there’s the Grab Bag Apps program on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. This program will feature apps picked by the Greenwich Library staff.
