It was a glorious Greenwich afternoon as more than 1,000 onlookers gathered at Conyers Farm on North Street last Sunday to watch some of the finest international high-goal polo players in the sport face off in a fierce battle.

Featuring all the stuff of a good drama, the high-fire Connecticut Energia team wound up trouncing their opponent, Airsteam, 12-9, in an intensive duel that featured full-throttle playing right from the first through the final chukker.

“It was great to be out there and we just tried to play our best,” said Kris Kampsen, the six-goal polo lead player for Connecticut Energia who scored six of his team’s 12 goals and was named the Most Valuable Player of the match. “A lot happens out on the field and we’re always moving, that’s for sure.”

Without a doubt, Mr. Kampsen, along with every other player at this match staged quite a show as they spent the afternoon flying furiously up and down the three football-length field on their muscle-bound ponies hitting the ball back and forth to one another like Stanley Cup hockey players.

The world-class skills of Mr. Kampsen and the other players at these matches are the reason why so many hundreds of spectators, most of whom are from the New York metropolitan area, flock to this famous storybook-like destination every Sunday during the warm-weather season.

This high-energy group, comprised of families, adults of all ages, children, teenagers and lots of dogs, all help make for a memorable dynamic that seems to relish the prospect of spending time at Greenwich Polo Club, which wasn’t just holding a match this past Sunday, but also the annual Serendipity Horsing Around For Charity event. The Greenwich-based magazine sponsored the event and 100% of the net proceeds went to the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding program.

“It is a pleasant way of life here,” said Arthur Loh, who has been a Greenwich Polo Club member and has had a grandstand box seat for more than 25 years. “I enjoy coming here to watch the matches and spend time with my family and friends — it is just great.”

As always, the fashion element adds a colorful and dynamic aesthetic to the whole polo experience. The crowd is usually donned in bright sundresses, eye-catching hats, well-fitted suits and smart weekend get-ups and collectively seem to reflect the high energy, standard and mentality of the whole Greenwich, Westchester and New York metropolitan area.

“We do this every year and have come for four to five years. It’s a great way to start the summer,” said Enrico Contenti of Manhattan, N.Y. “The matches are terrific and there is good people watching.”

Jenni Salinas of Greenwich, who was at last Sunday’s match attending the Serendipity benefit with her family, said the polo experience for her is also about helping out and being part of the community.

“We come once a year and always have a great time,” said Ms. Salinas, who is involved with the Greenwich Hospital Foundation benefit planning committee and enjoyed watching her son, three-year-old son Eric run around the field during the match’s “divot-fixing” break. “We love being here, it’s just so beautiful.”

Alex Roldan, manager of the Greenwich and Bridgehampton Polo organizations, agreed.

“Greenwich is the house of high-goal polo for the Northeast in the summer,” he said. “This is just an amazing place.”
