The Greenwich High School girls varsity water polo team recently did its part in fighting cancer, as the teens raised $500 for the upcoming Greenwich/Stamford Swim Across America event.

Big Red head coach Bill Harris asked the girls to donate to charity in lieu of a coach’s gift. To honor Harris, and also the mother of a teammate who was diagnosed with cancer, the girls ran a bake sale.

Swim Across America funds raised this year will go directly to the Stamford-based Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), which supports breakthrough cancer research around the globe.

The eighth-annual Greenwich-Stamford Swim Across America will take place Saturday, June 21 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at 96 Cummings Point Road in Stamford. To find out more about the event, contact Jacque Lang at 203-428-0313, email [email protected] or visit Swimacrossamerica.org/greenwich.

Founded in 1987 by Connecticut residents Matt Vossler and Jeff Keith, Swim Across America is now the nation’s largest national non-profit that battles cancer through swimming. Its events, which include 18 open water swims and hundreds of pool swims annually, have raised over $55 million to combat cancer.

Swim Across America relies heavily on volunteers, including swimmers and on-site professionals like EMTs, nurses and boaters, to facilitate events. All funds raised locally also stay local, supporting neighboring nonprofits and research and treatment efforts.

Beneficiaries include Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Kimmel Cancer Center and other distinguished facilities.
