Second Congregational Church plans Tent Weekend

Second Congregational Church in Greenwich will hold its Tent Weekend this weekend from June 6 to 8.

Events at this annual celebration will include a student show, music, carnival, picnicking and worship. Church officials say this is the perfect chance to help celebrate the return of warm weather.

The events will be held on the church campus at 139 E. Putnam Avenue and the weekend gets its name because, with one exception, activities will be on the lawn or under a tent behind the church. Folding chairs will be provided under the tent, and the tent’s sides may be used in case of rain.

“Tent Weekend is an annual tradition we really look forward to here at Second Church,” said Rev. Maxwell Grant, the church’s senior minister. “But this year, after what felt like the world’s longest winter, the chance to enjoy a host of activities outside is especially welcome. On Sunday, we’re excited to be welcoming more than 15 new members, celebrating our congregation’s graduates and sending a beloved staff member off on a summer sabbatical, so there is a lot to be thankful for.”

On Friday, June 6 at 5, 7 and 8 p.m. in the Waterman Chapel there will be an original student show. Church youths will present a student-created performance titled Journal Through the Mind of a Teenager including music, innovative staging and audio-visual features. This will be the only event scheduled for inside the church. Then at 6 p.m. there will be a jazz concert featuring the Greenwich High School Jazz Band as it performs jazz standards and favorites under the tent. And while the music begins at 6, starting at 4:30 p.m., concertgoers may bring picnic suppers to eat on the lawn.

Then on Saturday, June 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. there will be the penny carnival. Attractions will include face painting, a dunk tank and games. Ice cream and popcorn will be served.

At 4 p.m. there will be a Bossy Frog Band performance as the award-winning, interactive band encourages children to sing, move, think, feel, imagine and have fun.

Attendees may bring their own picnics.

The weekend of festivities concludes on Sunday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. with a worship service. But this will be an unusual one as the church will hold its annual traditional service under the tent. Following the service there will be an 11:30 a.m. picnic with refreshments, fun, fellowship and activities for all ages.
