Greenwich Fire Department welcomes Varanelli

The Greenwich Fire Department’s newest career firefighter has graduated from the Connecticut Fire Academy as Michael Varanelli successfully completed his 14-week recruit class in Windsor Locks.

The 14-week course consisted of live burn, rescue, equipment and safety modules designed to prepare candidates for the rigors of their firefighting careers. Mr. Varanelli, a resident of Harwinton, served as a Combat Medic in the Army National Guard assigned to the 143rd Military Police Company and spent nine months deployed in Afghanistan. He is also a six-year veteran of the Harwinton Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Varanelli comes to the Geeenwich Fire Department certified as a State of Connecticut Firefighter II, EMT-I and in Hazardous Materials Operations. He is also currently enrolled at Central Connecticut State University in a Baccalaureate program in public administration.

According to the department, Mr. Varanelli will complete a 30 to 60-day field training period geared towards Greenwich specific equipment and operations and then will be assigned to one of the four shifts.
