Greenwich is a community that no doubt enjoys its proximity to the water and the town is urging local sailors to always remember safety first.

National Safe Boating Week, which took place May 17 to May 24, is a tradition that harks back to 1958, when it was proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The week alerts recreational boaters to practice safe boating by wearing a life jacket, preparing your boat with required safety essentials for paddle boats, sailboats and powerboats. The Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 78 in Greenwich, is happy to help boaters prepare for the session.

Members of the Flotilla are qualified to conduct Courtesy Vessel Exams and qualified instructors will teach  visitors about the  State Approved Boating Safety course, Safe Boating Certificate and Personal WaterCraft Certificate.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is the civilian component of Coast Guard Forces. Founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the US Coast Guard Reserves and re-designated the Auxiliary in 1941. The 31,000 volunteer members (men and women) donate thousands of hours in support of Coast Guard missions.
