Scrabble tournament coming

Ready to go for that triple word score?

Scrabble enthusiasts are ready to show some serious word power at the Second Annual Old Greenwich Scrabble Tournament set for the weekend of Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. This event is officially sanctioned by the North American Scrabble Players Association (NASPA) and it is the last major tournament before the National Scrabble Championship, which offers a top prize of $10,000.

Local players are expected to make up the majority of the competition, but the event will also likely draw top players from California, Virginia, Illinois, and Ohio for the 16-game main event. The tournament also offers a five-game Early Bird contest on Friday, and a three-game “Newcomers’ Tournament” on Saturday morning that is geared to making the transition from casual or Internet play to tournament play an easy one.

For trivia fans, the tournament will also be offering a Jeopardy-style game show on Saturday night, hosted by Jeopardy! Champion Jason Keller, who won $213,900 on the show this winter, making him one of the show’s most successful champions. The game show starts at 8:30 p.m.

The tournament offers divisions for all levels and ages and cash prizes will be awarded in all divisions. The tournament begins at noon on Friday with a five-game Early Bird event. The 16-game Main Event, which runs through Sunday, starts at 8 p.m. with three games, followed by eight games on Saturday and five on Sunday. The Newcomers Tournament, which will have both adult and youth divisions, starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Cornelia Guest, who guest coaches Scrabble in several local libraries and schools, will welcome players and go over basic rules before the three games begin.

“I love seeing new players try tournament Scrabble,” Ms. Guest said. “Last year a Greenwich woman who had never been in a tournament before played 21 straight games and did very well.”

To register for the tournament, go to Cross-tables.com and click under Old Greenwich to download a flyer, or call Ms. Guest at 203-244-5324. No walk-in entries will be accepted. The tournament is open to players with all levels of Scrabble experience. The entry fee for the “Newcomers’ Tournament” is $30. The Early Bird entry fee is $50. The Main Event, which includes lunch on Saturday, has entry fees of $85, $100, or $125, depending on level of play.
