Greenwich baseball, softball, volleyball teams set for CIAC action

Today a handful of Greenwich High School athletic teams found out where they will be heading when the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs get underway next week.

The GHS baseball team, fresh off an upset over Staples and an appearance in the FCIAC semis, finished the regular season with a 13-7 record and earned the No. 12 seed in the class LL postseason.

Greenwich’s first round opponent will be No. 21 seed Newtown High School. The game will be played Monday afternoon at Greenwich High School and first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. The winner of the game will advance to the second round and will battle the winner of No. 5 seed Naugatuck High School and 28th seed East Hartford on Tuesday at the higher seed.

Overall, Fairfield Prep is the class LL highest seed, entering the postseason with a record of 17-3. Not to be outdone is Staples High School, as they are the second-seeded team with the same 17-3 mark. In addition, Southington is the No. 3 seed with the same 17-3 record.

In the class LL tournament, the FCIAC is well-represented. In addition to Greenwich and Staples, Trumbull is the 10th seed, while Fairfield Ludlowe is 11th overall. Fairfield Warde is the 15th seed and Danbury is 16th. Westhill enters the class LL tourney as the No. 23 seed and next to them is Ridgefield as a 24th seed. Wilton is seeded 25th and Norwalk rounds out the FCIAC teams as a 27th seed.

In addition to the baseball team, the Greenwich High School softball team will be hosting a playoff game to start the CIAC class LL postseason.

The Lady Cardinals are the highest seed in quite a while, entering the tournament as the third seed overall with a 17-3 record and will battle No. 30 seed West Haven High School Monday at 4.

If Greenwich claims victory, they will continue to host the playoff games until the class LL semifinal round. Their second round game could have revenge written all over it. If Greenwich beats the Blue Devils, they will play the winner of the No. 14 seed Westhill and No. 19 Conard game.

This season, the Cardinals lost to Westhill 1-0 in the regular season and again 5-0 in the FCIAC opening round.

Overall, Southington is the class LL top seed and enter the tournament with a perfect 20-0 record. Seeded second is fellow FCIAC foe Darien High School, as they have a 18-2 regular season record.

Once again, Greenwich, Wsthill and Darien will have a lot of FCIAC company this postseason, as Fairfield Ludlowe is seeded ninth overall and Stamford High is the 12th seed. Trumbull High is the 16th seed, while Danbury is 20th, New Canaan is 21st, Fairfield Warde is 22nd and Norwalk is seeded 23rd in class LL. Rounding out the FCIAC teams is Staples, as they are seeded 28th.

The Greenwich High boys volleyball team was able to able to find its way into the CIAC class L tournament. Coming in with a 7-9 mark this regular season, the Cardinals will be the 12th seed and will travel up to Glastonbury High School Tuesday for its opening round game at 6 p.m.

The winner of the opening round game will advance to the class L quarterfinal round and play the winner of No. 4 seed Cheshire High School and No. 13 Simsbury High.

Overall, the FCIAC had a strong boys volleyball season. Ridgefield is the overall No. 1 seed in class LL with a 17-1 record this season. Right behind them is second-seeded Staples High School with a 15-1 mark. At the No. 11 seed is the Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe combined team, as they finished the season with a 8-10 record.
