Stanwich School says 13 hurt, nine released from hospital after bus crash

Police say 13 students from Stanwich School were injured after their bus was involved in a single vehicle accident.

According to Greenwich Police Department Public Information Officer Lt. Kraig Gray, none of the injuries are considered to be serious though. The students were taken to both Greenwich and Stamford Hospital for treatment. Stanwich School said that as of 6:45 p.m. Wednesday night, nine of the 13 students had been released and the rest will be kept overnight for observation. One student reportedly is being treated for a broken bone.

The students involved were of high school age according to police and were traveling from the upper school in Stamford to the Greenwich campus on Stanwich Road. Police say the driver swerved across the road but said that as of now it was unclear why. The bus then struck a large tree causing significant damage to the front. The driver, a 74-year-old man, was also taken to the hospital and treated.

According to police, “All the passengers within the vehicle were thrown forward causing some form of injury. The injuries range from bumps, bruises, and bloody noses too broken bones. None of the injuries at scene appeared to be life threatening.”

The school is set to celebrate its first commencement Thursday night, a historic event for the independent school in town, as it marks its first graduating class of high school seniors. The event is set to go on as scheduled.

In a Wednesday evening statement, the school said the cause of the accident was still under investigation and the school will have its psychologist on campus to meet privately with people.

“Please join all of us in keeping the students and families in your thoughts and prayers,” Stanwich Head of School Paul Geise said.
