Greenwich St. Patrick’s Day parade organizers say thank you

FI-Letter-to-the-EditorTo the Editor

On behalf of the Greenwich Hibernian Association, sponsor of the St. Patrick’s Day parade held March 23, our thanks to the Greenwich Police Department, under the direction of Chief James Heavey, our grand marshal for 2012.

Also, a hearty thanks to our fine traffic division, who safely managed the large crowds. Thanks to Greenwich police technician Sean Fox for blowing the whistle to start the parade.

Each year the Parks and Recreation Department, under the guidance of Frank Gabriele, goes beyond the call of duty to ensure a successful parade. First Selectman Peter Tesei made sure that we had the cooperation of all the town departments necessary in the planning of the parade. Our thanks to Selectmen David Theis and Drew Marzullo, who are strong supporters, and special thanks to Mr. Theis and Wells Fargo for the beautiful  horses.

Thank you to Monsignor Frank C. Wissel, the Rev. William Gemza and the staff at St. Mary Church for helping with Mass and the brunch arrangements. Also, thanks to the Rev. Mark Connolly. And a big thank-you to our 2014 grand marshal, William Gallagher, for graciously accepting and carrying out the position with dignity and pride.

Thanks to the parade committee volunteers: John Kavanagh, treasurer, James Dougherty Esq., publicity, and Haydn O’Shea, master of ceremonies, and also to John Halpin, Mary McNamee, Annette Scanlon, Liz Halpin, Patrick Duffy, and Patrick McGovern. A special thanks to those who helped at the reception.

We were again fortunate to have the beautiful voice of Kimberly Maguire singing the American and Irish national anthems.

Even though we have volunteers, a parade this size is costly, so a big thanks to our loyal followers who generously respond to our annual appeal. A special thanks to our corporate sponsor, the First Bank of Greenwich.

Thanks to all of you who marched with us. Some organizations have marched in the parade since its inception, 40 years ago. Thank you to the Kiwanis Club, our unsung heroes, under the direction of Nick Edwards and his fantastic committee. They managed to assemble the 2,000-plus marchers and various vehicles in the Town Hall parking lot and then disburse them in an orderly fashion, according to script.

It was a fine parade because of all of you. We look forward to seeing you at the 41st parade, on March 22, 2015.

Thank you and may St. Patrick bless you.
