Diane Marie Day Grace, 54, Greenwich native

Obit-Grace-5-29Diane Marie Day Grace, age 54, who grew up in Greenwich before moving to Whitehouse Station, N.J., died on May 19.

Ms. Grace was an only child but her family recalled how happy she was spending time with her cousins in New Jersey, who they said were more like siblings to her. Ms. Grace’s parents both died when she was in her 20s and she had a particularly close relationship with her mother’s sister, Norma Smith Schultz, who family members said was “like a second mother” to Ms. Grace.

Ms. Grace had one child, Chloe Savannah Grace. Her daughter has autism and family remembered the way Ms. Grace struggled along with her, the two of them together every step of the way. “She never gave up in helping Chloe and surrounding her with love, whether it was through words, a hug, a funny face, or gestures guiding a very active child through a world that is very hard to explain,” the family said.

Ms. Grace is survived by her husband, Jamie, and their daughter. The family said it wanted to extend “special thanks” to the doctors, nurses and ER workers at Danbury Hospital and to the “selfless” EMTs and paramedics of Redding, West Redding, and Bethel for their “valiant and tireless efforts on Diane’s behalf.”

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on May 28 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Georgetown.

Donations in Ms. Grace’s memory may be made to AutismSpeaks.org.
