Greenwich Hospital to screen documentary for community nurses

In celebration of nurses throughout the community, on Wednesday, May 28, Greenwich Hospital will present two free screenings of The American Nurse: Healing America, a documentary film that follows five American nurses as they care for their patients in conventional and non-traditional healthcare settings.

The film, which debuted nationwide during National Nurses Week, from May 6 to 12, explores important issues facing the nation — aging, poverty, war and prisons — through the lives and work of these nurses.

“We are proud to offer this film to our extraordinary nurses here at Greenwich Hospital and others from throughout the surrounding communities,” said Sue Brown, RN, Senior VP/patient care services. “Nurses are the backbone of healthcare in our country and this documentary is an important statement about how they touch and change lives every day with their dedication, compassion, wisdom and skill.”

In preparation for The American Nurse project, Director Carolyn Jones interviewed more than 100 nurses . The five nurses featured in the film are Jason Short, who cares for a home-bound cancer patient in Appalachia; Tonia Faust, who runs a prison hospice program; Naomi Cross, who coaches an ovarian cancer survivor through a Caesarean delivery; Sister Stephen, a nun who runs a nursing home filled with animals that interact with the residents and Brian McMillion, an army veteran and former medic, who works with wounded soldiers returning from war.

“When I started to dig into the world of nurses, I recognized a few things right away,” said Ms. Jones. “They are different. They see the human being first. They are trained, conditioned, born to find the avenue into understanding others so that they can do their work. That work is to heal … they are full of tolerance and understanding, compassion and love. And it’s beautiful.”

Screenings will take place in the hospital’s Noble Conference Center, at 5 Perryridge Road, at 5 p.m. and again at 7 p.m.. The event is free and open to all nurses throughout the area.

To attend, RSVP to Barbara Hubbard at 203-863-3234. Walk-ins are welcome, but seating is limited.
