Red Cross presents Safety Town program

The Red Cross will host its annual comprehensive safety education program, Safety Town from June 2 through June 6 and June 9 through June 21 at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center.

The program, originally brought to Greenwich by the Junior League of Greenwich, is now run by the Metro New York North Chapter of the American Red Cross. During the week-long half day sessions, morning sessions will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and afternoon sessions will meet from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m.

Under the guidance of classroom teachers, police officers, fire fighters, EMS and other community helpers, children will be taught in an indoor classroom setting as well as on a specially designed kid-sized “Safety Town” layout. Topics covered include automobile, pedestrian, fire, bike, gun, animal, playground and water safety, along with information about medicines and poisons, and traveling on trains and buses, stranger awareness and more.

Daily lessons are followed up with take-home handouts and additional reference information for parents and caregivers.

Each child will be fitted with their own bike safety helmet to use for the week and then take home to keep. They will ride pedal cars and walk and “shop” through the town, complete with buildings, crosswalks, sidewalks, street markings. They will also tour an ambulance, fire truck and school bus.

Mary Young, CEO of Metro New York North, said, “The kids have a great time while learning essential safety rules and tips. It’s important that they learn the roles of the first responders; this knowledge could make an important difference to them one day.”

Registration is open to all, but space is limited. For more information or to register your child for Safety Town 2014, visit the American Red Cross’ Children’s Safety and Preparedness Programs site and download the Safety Town application forms. Forms are also available at the Greenwich Red Cross office at 99 Indian Field Road.

Tuition for the session is $195 and scholarship assistance is available.
