American Legion to honor our fallen war heroes

As the town gathers to mark Memorial Day this weekend, the annual ceremony at Indian Harbor Yacht Club will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday May 26.

State Sen. L. Scott Frantz will be the guest speaker at the ceremony which takes place in the morning before the parades and is organized by the American Legion Post 29.

“We are honored to have the participation of Scott this year as he has always been an avid supporter of our military and veterans and in many ways epitomizes the definition of a modern patriot,” said Christopher Hughes, a Marine veteran and commander of Post 29. Mr. Hughes also serves as master of ceremonies for the event.

The event is open to the public and will be held at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club and begin promprtly at 8 a.m. so punctuality is encouraged.

Mr. Hughes said the purpose of the event is to, “Honor the brave men and women who have given their lives in defense of our great nation, from the patriots on the Green at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1776, to the hills of Afghanistan today.”

There will be a meet and greet immediately following the event, which will feature several tributes including a youth flag presentation, memorial wreath presentations, reading the roll call, a twenty-one-gun salute, music and more.

A special part of the event this year will be the participation of a group of young men and women who have joined the United States Marine Corps and are awaiting their departure to boot camp.

The event is open to the public and residents are encouraged to bring their children. Veterans are asked to wear their uniforms.
