Historical Society receives Connecticut Humanities Council grant

The Greenwich Historical Society recently received a grant of $27,200 from the Connecticut Humanities Council (CHC) to plan and expand its interpretation of the Cos Cob art colony and to enhance its visitor experience. The goal of the project is to offer museum-goers an entirely new level of involvement through a special exhibition to mark the restoration of Bush-Holley House. The restoration will celebrate its distinction as a historic American landmark and take a closer look at significant works of art within the house. The Historical Society will use CHC funds to hire Cornerstone Spacial Design and Construction to create the exhibition plan for A Good Light: The Artist’s Studio in Cos Cob and Beyond, which will be guest curated by Greenwich scholar Susan Larkin.

The exhibit will take place in the Storehouse Gallery that once served as the art colony’s post office. Kate Johnson, former senior curator of Historic Hudson Valley, will work with Historical Society staff on refurnishing Elmer MacRae’s studio and will plan a new art tour and a lecture series this fall on relevant art, history and literature from about 1890 to 1920. The grant also will go towards the evaluation and digitization of archival and museum materials that relate to the art colony to share the materials online with a broader audience.

“We are truly grateful for the support of the Connecticut Humanities Council for our plans to enliven the presentation of Bush-Holley House,” commented executive director Debra Mecky. “Through these initiatives the Greenwich Historical Society will be able to enrich the content visitors can experience on site and online as they explore the historical and cultural significance of this treasured National Landmark house and site.”
