Claudia Dumschat was given the 2013 Owl Award by the Greenwich Pen Women.

Claudia Dumschat is flying high this year, having recently received the 2013 Owl Award, the highest honor presented by Greenwich Pen Woman, a branch of the National League of American Pen Women, whose members include professional writers, artists and musicians.

The Owl Award is given annually to a member of the organization for outstanding contributions in her field, in the community and as a member of Pen Women.

Marcia Hamilton, a member of the organization’s board, presented the award to Ms. Dumschat on Dec. 14 at an awards event held at the Field Club of Greenwich. Her professional activities are many and varied, including a recent appearance with pianist Margaret Mills in a concert of music by women composers held at the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich.

The organization’s president, Joyce French, commented on the group’s successes during the past year at the awards event, including the publication of a book of poetry, Women’s Voices of the 21st Century: Experiences that Shape Women, currently on sale through the organization’s website.

The event also featured new members, who were presented by Membership Chair Deb Weir. The afternoon concluded with a presentation by Pen Woman Joanne Dearcopp, entitled The Writer’s Muse. She discussed the reasons why and the ways in which an author may benefit from having a “muse,” whether it is a professional editor, friend or family member.
