Spa time at the Waldorf

love-opera-victoria-bakerGuerlain. It is a name that sits in the pantheon of elegant French perfumery and reigns supreme.

One of the oldest perfume houses in the world, owned and managed by the Guerlain family from 1828-1994 its signature scents like “Shalimar” and “Samsara” evoke images of unparalleled elegance and Parisian style. In 1853 Guerlain first made its mark on French Society with the creation of its Eau de Cologne Imperiale which so charmed the Empress Eugenie, Napoleon III’s wife, she awarded Guerlain the title of His Majesty’s Official Perfumer in France.

As a doctor and chemist Pierre Francois Guerlain expanded the Guerlain brand to include innovative skincare. He was the first to sell eyeliner and mascara and in 1840 the first to introduce lipstick.

In 1939 Guerlain opened its first Institut de Beaute at 68 Avenue des Champs Elysees and invented an exclusive facial massage technique. Last week, I was excited to try the Guerlain Spa in NYC. Located on the 19th floor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel it’s an oasis of Parisian refinement in the Big Apple and the innovative flair that has made the French Guerlain so famous is prevalent.

As soon as you step out the elevator your senses are taken over by the elegant crystal chandeliers and the heady scent of Guerlain perfume. You are greeted with champagne and escorted through marble hallways to your very own personal suite. Replete with rain shower, plush bathroom, closet and a plethora of Guerlain products your suite is yours for the duration of your treatment.

Ladies, we are always looking for ways to turn back the hands of time and I think I may have stumbled upon just the thing. I had the Orchidee Imperiale Cure Treatment. Many of the products used come from the Orchidee Imperial skincare range and were inspired by the extraordinary longevity of orchid plants.

The orchid is one of the most beautiful flowers, capable of living for over 100 years even in hostile environments. Guerlain has sought to unlock the secrets of nature that the elegant orchid has so preciously guarded all these years.

The result? Pretty fantastic. All week long friends have been telling me my face is glowing: thank you Monsieur Guerlain!

Upon completion of your treatment you will be offered a complimentary Guerlain make-up touch-up. My make-up artist was superb and I walked out of the spa that day with the face of a new woman! I used to think the spa was a place to be pampered without getting any serious benefits. But the Guerlain Spa in NY provides pampering with a scientific perspective on making skin look as…well, as fresh and beautiful as the petals on an orchid.
