Shop ’til you drop at Sidewalk Sale Days

Loosen your purse strings and dig out your walking shoes — Greenwich Sidewalk Sale Days are back in town.

The Chamber of Commerce once again presents the popular shopping event from Thursday, July 12, through Sunday, July 15. Retailers on Greenwich Avenue and surrounding streets will offer bargains in sportswear, high fashion, gifts, jewelry, household goods, and more as they take their merchandise outside their stores and onto the sidewalks, resuming the popular outdoor summer shopping event.

There’s something for everyone at Sidewalk Sale Days, according to Marcia O’Kane, executive director of the chamber.

On Saturday and Sunday, Greenwich Avenue shoppers will enjoy live music by RJ Bracchitta and some of his fellow musicians, ballroom dancing demonstrations by Arthur Murray, and children’s face painting and balloon art. Tasty treats from participating restaurants will also be available for sale to refresh hungry and thirsty shoppers, including Restaurant Jean-Louis, which will feature a special Bastille Day menu to mark the July 14 holiday.

Despite an array of entertainment, “the stars of Sidewalk Sales are the merchants,” Ms. O’Kane explained.

“We’re so excited about this year because even the week before the event we have surpassed the number of merchants” who have worked the event in previous years,” she told the Post this week.

Last year’s Sidewalk Sales included 85 vendors, but many more are expected at the 2012 event, according to the chamber. With plenty of new retailers in the downtown area presenting fresh merchandise this year, it’s a “win-win situation” for everyone, Ms. O’Kane said. Even stores with unique niches will have something to offer, including Baccarat, which Ms. O’Kane reported will provide bargains on its crystal collections.

Sidewalk Sale Days was organized several years ago as a result of the Chamber’s “shop local doctrine” and have proven to be a success, driving foot traffic to Greenwich Avenue stores for a burst of sales over one long weekend.

Supporting local merchants is “so important for the livelihood of the local economy,” Ms. O’Kane said. Because of the initial success, what was once a one-day event has been expended to a four-day festival.

“People get results from Sidewalk Sales,” Ms. O’Kane said. Shoppers are now “elbow to elbow” as they hunt for bargains from both new retailers and old favorites like Vineyard Vines, Scoop NYC, J. Crew, Michael Kors, Simon Pearce, and Rinfret Ltd. Interior Design & Decoration.

Those in need of a quick refreshment may also stop by St. Mary Parish, where members of the chamber will be handing out free bottles of water to keep shoppers hydrated and moving.

Anticipation of this year’s event is high, Ms. O’Kane said. “There’s a real good buzz in the air.”

The event hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit or call 203-869-3500.
