Greenwich High boys lax falls to rival Prep in thriller, 12-11

The Greenwich High boys lacrosse team saw its seven-game winning streak to open the season come to an end on Thursday, when coach Scott Bulkley’s Cards lost to Fairfield Prep, 12-11, at Alumni Field.

“It was a pretty tight game, Bulkley said after Prep improved to 5-1. “I’m proud the guys got back in it. They (Prep) won the groundball war in the middle of the field. We had trouble clearing (in the second half).”

Greenwich took a 4-3 lead into the third quarter, and twice built two-goal advantages in the third quarter.

Kyle Foote’s goal after James Paradise took the ball away from a Prep defender and fed him in front, put GHS in front 7-5 with 4:35 left to play in the third.

All the momentum switched to the Jesuits at this point, as Burke Smith answered with a goal only 11 seconds later. That began a run of six straight Prep goals, the last coming at the midway point of the final frame.

Decker Curran made full use of a spin move to create space for a goal at 4:28.

With Mike Sullivan ruling the faceoff circle, the Cards had a chance to rally and did just that. Luke Finergan took a pass from Ryan Flippin and scored falling away from the net with 3:04 on the clock.

Sullivan won the ensuing faceoff, and taking Bulkley’s advice on attacking the net from a previous possession, he went right at Prep keeper Jack O’Conner and scored. With 2:58 remaining, the Big Red deficit was now 11-10.

Physical play in the Prep zone resulted in a pair of giveaways, with the Jesuits taking control with 38 seconds remaining. Prep’s Smith got free in front and Tommy Rogan had no chance. Prep led, 12-10 at 27.5.

Sullivan worked his magic one more time, and Flippin scored off a Nick Schepis assist, but there was only 2.5 seconds on the clock.

“It was a game of runs,” Bulkley said. “We had to fight through (six straight Prep goals) and for two or three minutes we got right back in it.”

Greenwich will play Lakeland-Panas out of New York at Cardinal Stadium Saturday at 11 a.m.
