It was a thriller on the tennis courts earlier today, but the Greenwich High School girls tennis team will have an enjoyable start to its spring break, as they edged Darien High School, 4-3.

“This was a great match for us,” Greenwich High School head coach Betsy Underhill said. “Darien has excellent talent this year. This was our first challenging match and I went in with no expectations because half our team is now and I look at this year as a building year. It was a great win and a great way to start off a week vacation.”

In the No. 1 singles, Anna Dacchache lost to Darien’s Kateri Martin 6-1, 6-0, but Big Red rebounded at No. 2 singles. Maddie Arnold beat Mia Durst 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

“This had to be the best match out there today,” Underhill said. “Well fought from both girls and it doesn’t get any closer in ability, in match-play or in fair play with fair calls.”

At No. 3 singles, Greenwich’s Maggie Glynn finished off Pia Teschner 6-3, 6-3, while Big Red’s Hannah Kratky took care of her opponent at No. 4 singles, Sandhya Avula 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Greenwich’s lone victory at doubles was at No. 3 doubles, when Isabelle Janssen and Maitlyn Murphy took care of Allegra Molkenthin and Susie Alptekin 6-3, 7-5.

“Freshly paired two days ago, these two are a team to watch,” Underhill said. “In two matches, they have come back from being down 5-3.”

At No. 1 doubles, the Cardinals’ Julie Ackerman and Lizzie Griffin fell to Darien’s Erika Gill and Libby Feingold, 4-6, 2-6. At No. 2 doubles, Greenwich’s Lena Schipper and Reilly Sheets were defeated by Darien’s Catherine Hatfield and Anna Barsanti 6-4, 3-6, 3-6.
