An evening with child ed author Alfie Kohn

Are we raising a generation of spoiled and over-protected narcissists? “Education provocateur” Alfie Kohn will be addressing this multifaceted question at a lecture on Wednesday, April 9 at Temple Sholom at 7 p.m.

He challenges the misconceptions of raising today’s kids in his new book The Myth of the Spoiled Child, and will discuss his research at the latest in the Whitby School Lecture Series. His book addresses the culture of
“helicopter parenting” and a generation of overprotected children. He readily “challenges fears and fallacies about kids — what they’re like and how they’re raised.”

Mr. Kohn is the author of 13 books, including Punished By Rewards, The Schools Our Children Deserve, Unconditional Parenting, The Homework Myth. He has been described by Time magazine as “perhaps the country’s most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades [and] test scores.” Kohn lives in the Boston area. For more information, visit Alfiekohn.org.

The evening is hosted by Bryan Nixon, head of school at Whitby. The event is free to the public, and tickets are available at Whitbyschool.org/alfiekohn. Space is limited. RSVP by Monday, April 7, to Cecilia Whang at [email protected] or 917-579-6756.

Temple Sholom is located at 300 East Putnam Avenue.
