More severe thunderstorms due Monday

After a quick but loud and somewhat damaging thunderstorm in the area Monday morning, there is a severe thunderstorm watch in effect through 2 p.m. for all of Connecticut.

As of 10 a.m., there were still 138 Greenwich Connecticut Light & Power customers without power after the storm around 8 a.m. While the sun came out for a while, the sky became overcast again by 9 here. Some other towns in the area, such as Westport where there was report of at least one building being struck by a lightning and catching fire, suffered the worst damage and higher power outage percentages. New Haven Line wires were damaged in Southport this morning, which was causing train delays up to 20 minutes, according to Metro-North Railroad.

A cold front is passing through southern Connecticut Monday, according to the National Weather Service, “resulting in widespread showers and thunderstorms. A few storms may be strong to marginally severe, with strong gusts as the main threat. Heavy rain, with totals between 3/4 and a little over an inch is also expected. Localized areas may see higher amounts in a short period of time that coul dresult in possible urban flooding. Isolated flash flooding will be possible as well.”

The high Monday is expected to be about 74 in Darien. There could be some more showers and thunderstorms before 11 p.m. and overnight, according to the weather service, with a low of 58.

On Tuesday, there is another chance of showers, but no hazardous weather at this time, according to the weather service. Tuesday’s high is again near 74. There is another chance of showers Tuesday night, with a low of about 60.

Wednesday could bring more thunderstorms with a high of 79 and a low of 64.

The weather is supposed to heat up later in the week. Forecasts call for a high of 84 on Thursday and 87 on Friday. Thursday is expected to be sunny. Friday has more thunderstorms in the forecast.
