Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Greenwich

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 Friday night for Greenwich and most of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

“Showers and thunderstorms have rapidly developed across the region and are expected to move east-northeast across southern Westchester County, southwest Fairfield County and portions of western Long Island through 2:30,” the service said in a weather bulletin issued after 1:30. “This activity has the potential to cause very heavy rain and dangerous lightning and gusty winds to 40 mph.”

The weather service’s hazardous weather outlook warns of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening “capable of strong to damaging wind gusts. The main threat with any convection will be torrential downpours — with potential for flash flooding in the path of any training cell.”
