Memoir writing workshop

Learn the art of memoir writing at a weekly workshop series held at the Greenwich Library with instructor Joan Motyka beginning March 27 through May 8.

Aspiring memoirists can get started with this series, called Crafting Life Stories, which will be held on seven consecutive Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. In each two-hour session, students will learn how to discover and tell their personal stories.

Activities will include reading and discussing passages from memoir and occasionally from poetry or fiction that illustrate that week’s topic. Using readings, prompts and writing assignments, students will learn to draw stories from memory, organize them into a narrative and polish them through revision.

The program is designed to be a supportive environment that encourages writers of all levels. Armed with a background in journalism and fiction, Ms. Motyka will offer journalistic tools and literary techniques to help people explore the significance of people, places and events in their lives.

At the end of the workshop, excerpts or completed projects will be available on the Greenwich Library website with permission from class participants.

Registration for this free seven-week workshop opened earlier this month. To reserve a spot with your Greenwich or Perrot Library card number, contact Michele Martin at 203-625-6533. Space is limited.

Crafting Life Stories is made possible at no charge to patrons through the support of the Greenwich Library Board of Trustees and contributions by generous donors. For more information, call 203-625-6533 or visit
