Greenwich boys basketball seeded fourth in upcoming CIAC class LL tourney

The pairings are out and the Greenwich High School boys basketball team is seeking a trip to the Mohegan Sun Arena.

With a 18-2 regular season record and 20-2 overall, the Cardinals will be the No. 4 seed in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class LL tournament. Their first opponent will be No. 29 seeded Shelton, as the Gaels enter the playoffs with a 9-11 regular season record.

The game will be played at Greenwich High School and is slated to start Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

In fact, as long as Big Red keeps winning, Greenwich will host the first three rounds at 10 Hillside Road. If Greenwich pulls out the victory in the opening round, they will host the winner of the No. 13 seed Hartford Public versus No. 20 seed Wilton game. That game is slated for Thursday

The Warrior, a fellow FCIAC opponent, come into the tournament with a 12-8 regular season record and will travel to Hartford Public, where the Owls have a regular season record of 15-5.

Overall in class LL, Fairfield Prep finished the regular season a perfect 20-0 and grabbed the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Greenwich High’s competition in the FCIAC championship game, Bridgeport Central, finished second overall in class LL, grabbing a 19-1 regular season mark. The third seed in the class LL tournament is Crosby, as they also finished with a 19-1 regular season record.

Big Red as the fourth seed is the lone team in class LL with the 18-2 record. New Britain is fifth, Ledyard is sixth and New London is seventh and all three teams have a regular season record of 17-3.

The FCIAC is also well-represented in the class LL tournament. In addition to the second-seeded Hilltoppers, fourth-seeded Cardinals and 20th seed Wilton, the FCIAC has seven other teams competing for the state championship.

Westhill (16-4) is the eighth seed and will host fellow FCIAC opponent Warren Harding High School. The President are the No. 25 seed  and 10-10 overall. Ridgefield (16-4) will also host a first round game, as the Tigers are ranked 10th and will play No. 23 seed West Haven High School (12-8).

Stamford High School is the another conference team with an opening round home game. The Black Knights (14-6) enter the tourney as the No. 14 seed and will play 19th seed Glastonbury High.

Hitting the road in the opening round will be Brien McMahon High School, as the Senators finished the regular season with a 12-8 record and picked up a No. 21 seed. They will travel to 12th seeded Simsbury (15-5).

Another team from Norwalk, Norwalk High School, will be competing in the class LL tournament, as the Bears grabbed the No. 27 seed with a 9-11 regular season record and will play Ledyard. One spot down in the pairings is No. 28 seed Danbury, as the Hatters (9-11) will travel to fifth seed New Britain (17-3).

Rounding out the FCIAC will be Trumbull High School. The Eagles start play as the No. 31 seed and will take their 8-11 record to Bridgeport and play the second-seeded Hilltoppers.

The championship game is slated to be played at the Mohegan Sun Arena and is scheduled for either March 22 or March 23.
