Greenwich schools say no evidence of wrongdoing by Stamford teacher accused of indecency

Days after a substitute teacher in Stamford was arrested for alleged lewd conduct, the Greenwich Public Schools said there is no evidence he engaged in any similar acts while teaching in the district.

On Wednesday, Michael Luecke, 71, was arrested in Stamford and charged with public indecency, second-degree breach of peace and risk of injury to a minor after he was allegedly caught masturbating in Westhill High School. He had been brought in as a substitute teacher for the day and police say he was looking at school children while committing the act but there has been no allegation that he inappropriately touched any students.

Mr. Luck is being held on a $25,000 bond and has been placed on suicide watch as he remains in custody.

Mr. Luecke is a long-time substitute teacher within the area and has worked in several districts, including Greenwich. Because of this, the district is assuring parents that there has never been any kind of complaint or suspected incidents involving him while in town. On Friday, the district released a statement from the Director of Human Resources Bob Lichtenfeld acknowledging that Mr. Luecke had been used in the district as a teacher as recently as this past semester.

“Substitute teachers undergo the same hiring scrutiny as do our regular teachers including fingerprinting, a review of any past criminal activity, reference checks, and a Google search,” Dr. Lichtenfeld said. “In addition, we supervise our staff closely, and peer-to-peer observations also are strong. We have no evidence of inappropriate behavior by Mr. Luecke while he was a substitute in our schools.”

Dr. Lichtenfeld then added, “Rest assured that Mr. Luecke will no longer work in the Greenwich Public Schools in any capacity.”

Mr. Luck was scheduled to be arraigned in court on Thursday.
