Dixieland Band to pave way for Lent at Second Congregational Church

Second Congregational Church is celebrating Lent in the Mardi Gras spirit with a Dixieland band on Sunday, March 2.

The Crescent City Ramblers band, based out of Nanuet, N.Y., will provide a spirited accompaniment to the 10:30 a.m. worship service at the church on March 2.

The five-piece band will lead churchgoers in singing such classic hymns, and will accompany the church’s Chancel Choir on Southern gospel anthems. After the service, the band will continue to play Dixieland favorites as churchgoers enjoy refreshments.

“Traditionally, Lent is a season of deliberate spiritual preparation during the 40 days before Easter,” said Rev. Maxwell Grant, senior minister of Second Congregational Church. “Part of that preparation involves deliberate self-denial — going without sweets or red meat, or more recently, soda or nicotine. Mardi Gras, or ‘Fat Tuesday,’ is the big party before this period of self-denial begins. Our Mardi Gras service offers a chance to celebrate joyfully in the doldrums of winter before we begin to turn inward and get ourselves into shape spiritually for the great joy of Easter.”

Later in the week, the church will usher in Lent with a Shrove Tuesday pancake supper and an Ash Wednesday service. For details, visit 2cc.org/calendar/.
