Greenwich High wrestlers finish CIAC class LLs eighth

It was mission accomplished for the Greenwich High School wrestling team during the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference class LL tournament.

With head coach George Albano and the rest of the wrestling team hoping for a top 10 finish at the class LL finals at Trumbull High School, the Cardinals finished eighth overall with 91 points. Big Red was one point behind Shelton High School, which took seventh overall with 92 points and were two points ahead of Manchester High School, which grabbed ninth overall with 89 points.

Overall, it was Newtown High School that captured the class LL championship, leading the way with 213 points. Not far behind was Xavier, which took the silver with 207 points. Danbury High School grabbed third overall with 200.5 points and Simsbury finished fourth overall with 185 points. Rounding out the top five was Trumbull, as they scored 146 points.

Big Red was led by several athletes that had stellar performances. In the lightweight division, Brandon Aguda finished the class LL tournament fifth overall, beating Fairfield Prep’s Kevin Zentner.

Also grabbing a top six finish was Alex Jarombek in the 132-pound weight class. By beating Xavier’s Thomas Fredericks via a 5-2 decision, Big Red’s Jarombek was able to join Aguda and finish the class LL tournament fifth overall.

Not to be outdone was was Jack Freiheit in the 152-pound weight class, as the Greenwich wrestler took fifth place overall by beating Norwich Free Academy’s Jahill Bryant with a 3-1 decision.

At 113, Greenwich’s Alex Margetoes was able to medal and finished the class LL finals sixth overall. In his final match, Shelton’s Nico Distassio was able to come away with the 5-2 victory, however Margetoes was still able to medal for Big Red.
